For most cities, the sewer system will also carry a proportion of industrial wastewater to wastewater treatment plants, which will usually have received pretreatment at the plants to reduce pollution loads. If the sewer system is a combined sewer system, it will also carry urban runoff (stormwater) to the wastewater treatment plant.
In many areas, wastewater also includes liquid waste from industry and commerce. Segregation and drainage of domestic waste into greywater and blackwater is becoming more common in developed countries, with greywater being permitted for irrigation or reuse for toilet flushing. Water treatment
alone is not enough to ensure a sustainable water future. Water conservation measures, such as reducing consumption, managing runoff and implementing efficient irrigation techniques, are essential. Furthermore, raising public awareness of the importance of water conservation and responsible use will promote a collective commitment to preserving this invaluable resource.
